About the aarti ‘Jai Ambe Gauri’

‘Jai Ambe Gauri’ is the best-known Hindi aarti of Maa Durga. Across north and west India, Navratri, Mata ki Chowki, jagratas and every Devi puja end with it. It describes her form (sindoor in her hair parting, a musk tilak, red garments, the lion she rides, the sword and skull-bowl in her hands) and her victories over Shumbh and Nishumbh, Mahishasur, Chanda and Munda, Raktabij, and Madhu and Kaitabh.

The last verse names the poet, ‘Kahat Shivanand Svami’, so the aarti is regarded as the work of Shivanand Swami; nothing more about him is reliably known. The refrain ‘Jai Ambe Gauri, Maiya jai Shyama Gauri’ calls the Mother both ‘Gauri’, the fair one, and ‘Shyama’, the dark one.

How to do the Durga aarti

  • First finish the puja or the Durga Chalisa; the aarti comes at the end.
  • Light a ghee diya or camphor on the plate, with red flowers, roli, rice and prasad.
  • Sing the full refrain first, then circle the plate clockwise, repeating ‘Om Jai Ambe Gauri’ after every verse.
  • Afterwards pass both hands over the flame, touch them to your eyes, and share the prasad.

How many times to circle the aarti plate

The common tradition is four times towards the Goddess's feet, twice towards the navel, once towards the face, and then seven times before the whole image. Families differ a little; the devotion matters most.

When to sing it

At the end of the morning and evening puja every day, and especially in the nine days of Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri, both morning and evening. It is also sung on Fridays, on Ashtami, and at every Mata ki Chowki and jagrata.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote the aarti ‘Jai Ambe Gauri’?

The last verse names the poet: ‘Kahat Shivanand Svami, sukh sampatti pavai’, so it is regarded as the work of Shivanand Swami. Nothing reliable is known about his life.

When should I do the Durga aarti?

At the end of the puja, morning and evening. In the nine days of Navratri it is sung at both times, and especially on Fridays and Ashtami.

How many times should I circle the aarti plate?

By common tradition: four times towards the feet, twice towards the navel, once towards the face, then seven times before the whole image.

What does ‘Jai Ambe Gauri, Maiya jai Shyama Gauri’ mean?

‘Ambe’ means Mother. ‘Gauri’ is her fair, gentle form and ‘Shyama’ her dark form. The refrain says that even Hari, Brahma and Shiva meditate on her day and night.

Why is ‘Om Jai Ambe Gauri’ written after every verse?

That is how the aarti is sung: the full refrain at the start, and ‘Om Jai Ambe Gauri’ after each verse. Many people repeat the full refrain after every verse instead; both are fine.

Why is this aarti shorter in some places?

Some collections leave out the verses about Chanda-Munda, Brahmani, and ‘Tum hi jag ki mata’. Most sources have twelve verses, so the complete aarti is given here.

Which mantra is said after the Durga aarti?

Many families recite the Durga Saptashati verse ‘Sarvamangala mangalye…’ after the aarti, followed by a prayer for forgiveness. The custom varies from home to home.

Should I do the aarti after the Durga Chalisa?

Yes. By tradition a recitation ends with the aarti: read the Durga Chalisa first, then sing this aarti.

Is this the Marathi aarti ‘Durge Durghat Bhari’?

No. ‘Durge durghat bhari tujvin sansari’ is a separate Marathi aarti. This page has the Hindi aarti ‘Jai Ambe Gauri’, which you can read in Devanagari on the Marathi page.

Can I read this aarti in Hindi or my own script?

Yes. Use the Language menu to switch between Hindi, English, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Odia. The words stay the same, only the script changes.
